GREEN TREE - George Washington's baseball won the weekend series with the Dukes, 2-1, as they got a five-run victory over Duquesne Sunday afternoon at Duquesne Field.

Duquesne, which had eight hits to the Colonials' nine, was led by sophomore Chris Happ's 2-for-3, one RBI-double outing.

As they did yesterday, seniors Mike Carroll and Bill Torre each had a pair of hits. One of each's hits was a double and Carroll scored the DU run.

Sophomore starting pitcher Andrew Heck's pitching record is now tied at 1-1. The Pittsburgh native is batting .325 and was 3-for-5, with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI in yesterday's 13-6 win. Six runs scored, five earned, and Heck was knocked for three home runs in his in 7 2/3 innings on the mound. He struck out seven for a season total of 24, second highest for the Dukes. Yesterday's winning pitcher, Gary Pierpont, leads with 37.

Junior Paul Bugajski got the four outs, giving up just one hit while striking out two.

Duquesne is now 10-32, 5-12 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. With La Salle's win over Massachusetts today, the Explorers broke out of their last place tie with the Dukes.

Heck and GW starter Pat Lehman kept their opponents scoreless through four innings. Tim Reeves's leadoff homer in the fifth and Chris Holland's sixth inning, two-RBI round tripper put the Colonials ahead, 3-0. The Dukes got their run in the bottom of the sixth when Happ's two-out double scored Manley and moved Torre to third.

That was it for the Dukes while GW added three more for their 6-1 victory. George Washington increased their records to 19-24, 8-9 in the league.

Before next weekend's three-game home A-10 series with second-place Dayton (28-14, 14-4 A-10), the Dukes host Kent State (31-9) on Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at 3:00 p.m. on Duquesne Field in the Pittsburgh suburbs.
